Auditions for The X Factor 2012 began today in Liverpool with guest judge Geri Halliwell. The former Spice Girl has stepped in after Dannii Minogue pulled out of a deal to return to the show at the last minute.

It’s been reported Geri is one of a series of guests who will occupy the fourth judges chair during the auditions before a permanent replacement for Kelly Rowland is announced at the boot camp or judges houses stage of the competition.

Among the stars rumoured to be taking up one of the guest judge spots are Gwen Stefani, Gary Barlow’s friend and on/off band mate Robbie Williams, and ancient rocker Rod Stewart.

They will join Louis Walsh who returns for a record breaking ninth series of the show and last year’s newcomers Tulisa and Gary Barlow.

The Daily Star also claims that X Factor boss Simon Cowell is putting together a shortlist of singers who take up a permanent role on the show, they include Rita Ora, Avril Lavigne and Alicia Keys.

Rumours are also rife that Cowell could be working out a way to balance his commitments to the US version of the show with a return to the judging panel for the live shows in the UK.

Auditions for The X Factor continue up and down the country over the next few weeks, the show returns to our screens in August.
